Cellulite. We got a few natural ways to kick it in the butt (puns always intended)

Let's all say it out loud, together...CELL-YOU-LIGHT.  We all got it...well 85% of us do...and who are these 15%?  Can we meet them?  Oh wait...we did..at Coachella.  The long limbed uber models all under 30 with tight skin and not a dimple in sight ...well at least not on their legs.  But we digress...

Why is cellulite SO embarrassing?  If 85% of women have it, then why do we feel ashamed by it?  Most women who have it are already genetically predisposed to have it and the others may have it for a million other reasons.  Is it because the over airbrushing of our society says its awful?  So along with the other long list of things we buy into, we also buy into the fact that cellulite is unacceptable...yep.  So until we can change our own thoughts of how beauty truly is within and everything we have on the outside is perfect we will try to find ways to lessen the dimples and divots on our rears and thighs.  I called Mieke in tears last week because along with my Thyroid "petering out" and getting older and more wrinkled, I now have a few new visitors in the form of cellulite blankets on my legs and stomach.  She quickly turned the psychotic and neurotic convo into one of enlightenment.  So I began some research based on her idea of what I could do.

Cellulite is caused by a few factors other than just weight gain or genetics.  It can also be caused by hormone imbalances, poor diet, fad diets, dehydration, total body fat, lack of physical activity and skin color and thickness.

There are a few lasers and radio frequency treatments dermatologists can do to help but they are thousands and thousands of dollars per treatment area and there is no guarantee they will work.  And if they do it will take more than one treatment to get the job done.  So I turned to the more natural methods and here is what I found out....

NATURAL WAYS TO REDUCE CELLULITE-

  1. Detoxify
  2. Dry Brushing and Coconut oil
  3. Coffee Scrub/Wrap
  4. HYDRATE

DETOXIFY

The body stores toxins in fat to help minimize how much toxicity your vital organs are exposed to. The dimples and pockets of cellulite are also full of toxins. Toxicity accumulated in your body over the years will show in your cellulite (and a myriad of other unpleasant symptoms).  Take epsom salt baths, cut out refined sugars, processed foods, meats, cheeses and sodas and drink water and green tea and get active!

DRY BRUSHING (from wellness mama)

In addition to sloughing away dry skin on areas like knees, elbows and ankles, body brushing promotes tighter skin, cell renewal and blood flow. This also helps the lymphatic system release toxins and aids in digestion and kidney function. You’ll also notice a glowy, smooth complexion. We love it because it’s one of the easiest, cheapest and most effective things we can do for promoting healthy skin.

Using a natural bristled brush (plants) using upward motions towards your heart with a little muscle (enough to exfoliate but not hurt or irritate the skin), brush skin up and around.  Make sure skin and brush are dry.  Then hop in a hot shower and slather on pure coconut oil when finished.  Why put toxins back in your skin with a lotion filled with them?  (guilty!)

COFFEE SCRUB/WRAP

This treatment can be moderately effective. Try using fresh ground coffee to maximize the benefits, as it has more antioxidants and caffeine than used coffee grounds. Try this coffee-grind cocktail: Mix 1/4 cup ground coffee with 3 tablespoons hot water and let the mixture sit for 10 minutes to absorb the water and form a paste. Then, mix in 2 tablespoons of coconut oil to help bind the grinds. (This will make it easier to spread on, and offer extra moisturizing effects.) Cleanse problem areas in a warm shower, then turn off the water and apply the scrub by massaging in a circular motion for 2-4 minutes with your hands or a washcloth. Rinse with warm water to remove all grounds, then pat dry and moisturize if desired.  Or don't rinse it off and wrap plastic wrap around it and let it sit for an hour or 2.

How it works: The caffeine and antioxidants in coffee are moderately effective to mitigate the appearance of cellulite in the short term. As a stimulant, the caffeine in coffee dilates blood vessels, which temporarily tones and tightens tissue. Plus it increases circulation and reduces water retention, both of which may also help smooth the rumpled look of cellulite. The antioxidants in coffee may help to release toxins, which is not only helpful for cellulite, but for healthy skin in general.

HYDRATE-

Drink water...and lots of it.  At least 64 ounces a day.  Add some lemon or fruit or mint to add to the health benefits.  Clear out toxins that aid in making cellulite in your body with the help of a little h2o.  Clear skin, more energy and less dimples??...IN!

Over it, but don't have a gazillion dollars to do laser, Coolsculpting or rf?  Here are a few products that may help as well-

Cellulite or not...YOU ARE PERFECT.

Black Beauty- An ode to Activated Charcoal

My love affair with activated charcoal started about 12 years ago when I visited our friend in Jamaica, who's father who had cancer swears he cured himself with charcoal pills.  I dove head first into reading about it to perhaps help my dad who also had cancer.  I could not find too much info about the benefits of it with that disease but what I did find was exciting.  It is a natural detoxifier.  It helps pull toxins and poisons from the body.  It is used as a purifier so it made sense that my friends father used it when he was sick.

Activated charcoal is made from coconuts, wood or coal.  When heated to create charcoal it is cooled rapidly causing the ions to activate.  (it is NOT regular charcoal so please don't start licking bricks of BBQ charcoal)  It is put into capsule form making it easy to ingest or mix with liquids/gels/solids etc.  Hospitals use charcoal for patients who ingest poison (pharmacutical drugs, toxins, mercury, pesticides etc..)  but the home uses of this gorgeous pure black beauty are incredible.

Seeing Red Has Got Us Feeling Blue

We've talked to you all about how strong and heavy our periods have become after giving birth

We've offered up suggestions for the safest and best products to use when you're on your period.

What we haven't really talked about is PMS.... And yes, it's real.  Here are some facts about what you may be feeling and why right before your period starts.

(From the Mayo Clinic)

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) has a wide variety of symptoms, including mood swings, tender breasts, food cravings, fatigue, irritability and depression. It's estimated that as many as 3 of every 4 menstruating women have experienced some form of premenstrual syndrome.

What causes PMS?

(From womenshealth.gov)

The causes of PMS are not clear, but several factors may be involved. Changes in hormones during the menstrual cycle seem to be an important cause. These changing hormone levels may affect some women more than others. Chemical changes in the brain may also be involved. Stress and emotional problems, such as depression, do not seem to cause PMS, but they may make it worse. Some other possible causes include:

  • Low levels of vitamins and minerals
  • Eating a lot of salty foods, which may cause you to retain (keep) fluid
  • Drinking alcohol and caffeine, which may alter your mood and energy level

What are the symptoms of PMS?

PMS often includes both physical and emotional symptoms, such as:

  • Acne
  • Swollen or tender breasts
  • Feeling tired
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Upset stomach, bloating, constipation, or diarrhea
  • Headache or backache
  • Appetite changes or food cravings
  • Joint or muscle pain
  • Trouble with concentration or memory
  • Tension, irritability, mood swings, or crying spells
  • Anxiety or depression

Symptoms vary from woman to woman.

Another amazing thing that has happened to us after child birth is that our periods are very erratic. The days of knowing your period will show up on  certain date are gone for some of us and so our period always comes as a surprise... Will it last 3 days? Or maybe this is one of those 6 day visits! Amazing.

Lately I have downloaded an app called "Period Tracker!" to help me keep track.... So when I am feeling blue, when I start thinking all my friends are mad at me... When I can't sleep and am not able to stop eating chips and chocolate.... When my pants don't fit.... I won't get down on myself... I will know it's the PMS. O.K... I will hope it's the PMS.

If you also have trouble with your period schedule, we suggest you get a tracker app as well... We will be back with some tips and plans for how to minimize the effects of PMS as soon as we survive this week

XOXO- Mieke & Erin.

New manicures for a new you

What you do on the outside is really just a reflection of the beautiful person you are on the inside.  Makeup, sure it makes you look for awake after being up all night drinking or nursing a baby (or in our case convincing your 4 year old for the last 4.5 years that 4 am is not time to play) or a bit more together but what it's real job is to reflect who you are and feel like being that day.

If you are like us, putting on makeup everyday is not a reality (seriously WHO has the time?  And we actually love a clean face on women..talking to you Nicole Richie in all your gorgeous makeup free glory) but what we have been loving since we had kids is a good manicure (DIY or salon) to help remind us of who we are.

Hello beautiful jinxy.  LOVE your alien chic nails!

Hello beautiful jinxy.  LOVE your alien chic nails!

We are so happy nails are getting attention. And the coolest ones out there are chic and minimal.    Here are our favorite new minimalist manicures for a new you.

Gone are the days of just painting 1 nail (ring, pointer, pinkie) to express your cuteness now its all out (quiet) amazingness.  But don't let the minimalist approach fool you...these are anything but boring...

  • one- this subtle ombre from Essie using earthy greys has us feeling envy (the good kind)
  • two- new obsession, Depechegurl.  i promise you will see her in another post. Hi perfect minimalist manicure in matte black
  • three- so refreshing and delicate.  these gold foil moons from SHRN had us running to grab gold polish
  • four- love the new upside down glitter french manicure.  instead of putting it on the tip turn it upside down for a fresh look.  it is a grownup way to do glitter (via: pinterest)
  • five- oh hey! we know those nails.  i have been doing them like this for a while now but I'm still in love with them. minimal and clean (via: TWH )
  • six- these negative space triangles at the moon from Fashion Medley are killing us

PS if you are a DIYer the new peel off latex barriers make it way easier to get a clean look...

Beat those New Years blues (yes, its a thing! you are not alone!) with a new manicure.

FAST & Last Minute Halloween Costumes- all you need is the make up in your bag

Whoa!   Probably more than 10 minutes but easy and no costume needed.  Image: Pinterest

If there is one thing we love,  it's the magic of Halloween.   Ok, who are we kidding...we just love the excuse to wear a costume, dress up our kids and eat a ton of candy that we have smuggled from their loot.

Halloween is fun, spooky, candy filled, fantasy making and exciting.   But nothing is scarier than not having time to get a costume together!   Don't worry guys,  we got you.

A few weeks ago we were invited to a kids costume party and we had not a minute to even think if we were going to dress up let alone getting something together.  So what was I to do when my girls asked me to join them in their kitty fun?

I grabbed eye liner (lots of it), bronzer, blush, mascara (tons of it) and luminizer.  Voila!  Kitty on call.  I threw on some old ears we had lying around, a black utility suit and 10 minutes later we were off!

While I was searching deer costumes I came across the cutest account of a mama called The Beautiful Circus.  She had the sweetest deer tutorial on her insta account.  We are obsessed!  Fingers crossed the bunnies "beg" me to be bambi!

TheBeautifulCircus.com. How cute is she??

To get her look she used foundation, white cream makeup, bronzer, blush, eyeliner and mascara.  Head over to her blog for a tutorial and more cute animal ideas.

For years we have both been in love with the Roy Lichtenstein costume.  It's so classic and requires 15 minutes and only a few products.

Below is a detailed tutorial but you could achieve this look in less time.   Grab red & white lipstick or face paint, an eyeliner brush, bright shadow (blue and any other bright color. Blue is if you want tears)  , black eyeliner (gel pen is best), mascara and hairspray to hold your hair in place.

Need something even easier?  You can never go wrong with Kate the Great.

Dear Never-ending Story,  you will forever be our forever.  And childlike empress?  You will forever be our favorite dream costume.

Pinterest.  This takes nothing more than an upside down jeweled necklace, reddish brown shadow, eyeliner, mascara, blush and a white nightgown or poncho.

Why we haven't done it yet is beyond me.  Or is it because no one will be our luck dragon or Atreu.  Ahhhemmmmm...boys?!?

What ever you do or what ever you become...have a blast, eat candy, enjoy the moment and we love you!

Crystal Clear: Everybody must get stoned.

Photo: Things We Heart

Photo: Things We Heart

There is something magical and powerful about having crystals nearby you. We have always been in love with crystals and spent many a  childhood summer day on the Venice Boardwalk searching for the perfect crystal necklace.

Both of our homes are littered with different stones and crystals. We keep them by our beds, in our kitchens and pretty much on every other surface we can find.

But these past few years, more then ever, we are feeling the need for the power and protection that can be found in these beautiful treasures from the earth. What is this powerful draw and what does it mean? We have no idea and are hungry to know more.

Lucky for us and lucky for you, we happen to be friends with some ladies who can explain a little more clearly and enlighten us all.

We would like to introduce the girls behind VIGOR|SAGE, Sabrina & Rachel. Not only is their site full of amazing and beautiful images they are truly full of guides to "movement, healthful eating, travel, and living authentically."

We couldn't be more excited that they agreed to be our first expert interview on Things We Heart and share some of their knowledge.  Read bellow to find out what Sabrina has to share about the power of crystals and check out Vigor|Sage for more from these lovely women.

1. Tell us a little about your background & how you've come to know so much about crystals & gem stones and their power.

I’m pretty intuitive, incredibly empathetic (probably too much for my own good at times) and have always been interested in healing and helping others. Some of my fondest childhood memories are with my sister trying to read each other’s auras. I translated my love of movement and healing into a degree in Dance Science, thinking I would move into injury recovery for dancers. Soon after college I met my partner, Geoff and embarked on my greatest adventure, Motherhood. While trying to find the balance of independence and life as a Mama, I fell in love with yoga. I studied at White Lotus Foundation and became a certified yoga teacher, a year later I returned to WLF and studied Therapeutic Yoga. I found my true calling as a “healer”, a conduit of positive energy and light. As my passion grew, I began to fall more in love with the power of nature for its ability to help me stay grounded and inquisitive about connections. I became drawn to the magnificent power of gems and crystals for my own personal balance and found myself wearing certain ones to bring about energetic qualities. I soon realized how many stones I already had in my collection — from jade earrings I was gifted as a young child to an amber ring I acquired after the death of my grandmother — and began reading up on the stones I found attractive. I’m not an expert by any means, just incredibly curious and passionate.

2. We have always found our selves drawn to Amethyst, it has sort of become our friendship stone. We usually gift each other with beautiful stones and jewelry we stumble upon. What is the meaning of Amethyst and what does our strong pull towards it symbolize?

I think its so radical that you gift each other stones. Not only are they beautiful but incredibly meaningful on so many levels. Amethyst is a very powerful and protective stone. Among its many attributes, Amethyst transforms energy into love and enhances serenity and higher states of consciousness. It is one of the most spiritual stones and is known for its ability to help increase mental focus and balance the physical, emotional and mental bodies.

3. You have once told me about “Washing” or cleansing crystals. Can you explain how you do that and how energy differs depending on wether you cleanse them in sunlight or moonlight?

All gems and crystals attract and hold energy, both positive and negative, until the object is cleaned. There are many ways to cleanse and charge your crystals and gemstones, its best to find the most meaningful to you. I like to bring mine out in the light of a full moon and let them cleanse and charge overnight. You can also cleanse them in clean running water (make sure your crystal won’t be damaged by water) or by smudging with the smoke from white sage. Placing them in a cluster with a large crystal quartz will cleanse and re-energize your crystals. Sunlight can be a great way to charge your stones as well but you should be careful as some (like Amethyst) will fade or change color. I think the most important thing to keep in mind is your energy and intentions regarding your stones.

4. Name some powerful crystals and their meanings. What are your favorite?

All gemstones and crystals vibrate energy on different levels and are helpful in healing certain ailments. Quartz crystal is very powerful for healing and amplifying energy. Turquoise is a protective stone and has been regarded for ages as a good luck charm. Amethyst, as I mentioned before, is a very powerful stone for serenity. Black Tourmaline is very powerful for banishing negativity. There are so many amazing stones, its hard to choose just one. I tend to lean towards Crystal Quartz for its ability to amplify energy and Turquoise for its beauty and helpfulness with communication.  I am constantly drawn to Malachite, from its rich green color to its many powerful attributes.

5. What do you think about crystals in children rooms? Are there any stones that would be more powerful for children?

I am a firm believer that crystals can help anyone, whether they believe in the power or not. My son Rex was gifted a Jasper dinosaur when he was born that always stays near his bed. As he got a bit older he started having night terrors. I took him to a local store that sold crystals and was he immediately went for the raw quartz. Once we placed the quartz near his bed the nights became a lot calmer. He loves to collect stones and things of nature so we keep his collection together to amplify the natural energies. Children are very intuitive by nature and are attracted to stones without any judgement. It would be a fun trip to take them to a store and see what they pick up, this may give you some insight into their personalities. If you’re wanting to gift a stone to a child I would suggest Clear Quartz for its all purpose healing energy or Carnelian, which is known to help boost self-esteem and self-love.

6. Is there a love stone? A crystal or mineral that brings love to people?

Rose Quartz is known as the “Love Stone”. It is the stone of unconditional love and infinite peace. It is purifies and opens the heart on all levels and brings inner healing and self-love. It is helpful for mending a broken heart as well as bringing in love, once we are accepting and loving of ourselves, we are able to accept love from another.

7. What about a healing stone?

Stones have different healing properties. They work on the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels of being. Depending on your level of dis-ease, it may be helpful to seek advice from a crystal healer. I would suggest finding your way to a store that sells gemstones and crystals and taking note of which stand out to you. In general, Clear quartz, Amethyst and Turquoise are the most easily attainable stones and are very powerful healing tools.

8. Why has the diamond become the symbol for marriage? Do they have a significant meaning?

I’m sure there are many stories behind the meaning of diamonds as engagement ring stones. I believe the reason they have become so popular in this venue is because of their strength and durability. Within different cultures throughout history, diamonds have been associated with everything from sexual power to strength and protection, all of which are great symbols of an everlasting and loving relationship.
