Sakura- Cherry Blossom

Never has a single flower created such emotion and awe inspiring quiet at the same time as a cherry blossom.  So delicate so beautiful so graceful.  There is no other flower on earth that has its own festivals across the globe.  And to get to see a cherry blossom in person will turn any non-lover into a believer.  There is nothing like it.

The tree is so celebrated in Japan they have Hanami, which are picnic celebrations under the blooming trees every year.

We visited Washington DC this past week and were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of this spectacular flowering tree.  So lucky in fact that we arrived right smack in the middle of the short annual blooming season.

We both took our families out daily on treks to find more trees.  And every tree was as beautiful as we imagined it would be.

We can't figure out what we more sad to leave,  the cherry blossoms or the stunning city of Washington DC and all of its art.

The Kwanzan tree is the most magical fluffy blooming cherry of them all  They are all spectacular and jaw droppingly beautiful but the explosion of fluffy petals (much like our love the peony) make this one truly dreamy..we can't stop obsessing about it. But now we can all enjoy this tree thanks to The Planting Tree!

If you are not in the right spot to have your own tree there are a few other things you can enjoy to keep the feeling of spring in our homes year round!

Thanks to one of our favorite blogs, Oh Joy, we can taste a cherry blossom.  Her Sakura popcorn looks as beautiful as the cherry blossom itself and we can't wait to try it!

Sakura Candy Corn

4 cups white popcorn, popped

1/2 cup white sugar

1/4 cup water

1/4 tsp baking soda

a pinch of fleur de sel

1 tbsp butter, unsalted

5 drops sakura extract {or 1 tsp vanilla extract}

a touch of pink food dye {optional}

a handful of white or primary nonpareils {optional}

Here's how: Place the popcorn in a large bowl and set aside. On high-heat in a small saucepan, cook sugar and water until it reaches 290F {just under hard crack} on a candy thermometer. Add the soda and fleur de sel and swirl until combined {it will be a little frothy}. Remove from heat and add the butter, extract, and color and stir until combined. Quickly pour over popcorn and fold together until the sugar mixture coats most of the popcorn. Immediately sprinkle with the nonpareils. Let cool for 10 minutes.

Get yourself some cherry blossom essence here and get crazy!
