Good Day Sunshine- The safest sunscreens for you and your littles
Ok lets call this part 1. Part 1 of 2 of the safest and best sunscreens for you and your mini-me. Part 1 will focus on the whole body including face and Part 2 will be just for the face since thats a whole other animal. Is that a deal? There are so many and this is such an important subject it deserves to be given special attention.
If you are like most people, you reach for the sunscreen to coat your kiddos in the summer to keep the suns harmful UVA and UVB rays from damaging their skin and reducing the risk for sunburn and skin cancer but you either use the extra to rub on your hands or just skip yourself altogether. DO NOT DO THIS. Think of yourself on an airplane next to your kids, the flight attendant says "put your oxygen mask on before you put it on your kids".
You need sunscreen, not just to keep the crepe-y skin and leathery wrinkles at bay but to protect you against melanoma and other skin cancers. But if you choose the wrong sunscreen you will also have to worry about different cancers as well as reproductive concerns and other toxicities. Sorry we know its overwhelming and scary but we are here to help! We want you and your loved ones to be here and healthy for a long long time.
What got us here were the apps Think Dirty and Skin Deep. One day I lightly scanned my baby's Babyganics mineral sunscreen and up popped a big ol' red 10! Like 10 being the worst for you and 1 the safest. So I quickly scanned my favorite Sunbum spray and voila...a bright red 7! WTF? The list of ingredients these two don't have in them were the reasons I bought them. Made with minerals, organic...no this..no that...no parabans, petroleum, this and that but they were still toxic? So we both went into full mom panic mode and threw it all out and started over with the help of these 2 apps.
Here are 6 that we researched, love and can be used on the whole family and the best part they are easily applied, no weird sticky dragging or insane white mess and are all 100% mineral based with NO added chemicals.
What to look for- You want a Physical Sunscreen and not a Chemical one. Look for Zinc and/or Titanium Dioxide only in the list of active ingredients. Physical sunscreens (100% mineral based) actually block the suns harmful rays, while a Chemical one absorbs the rays and chemically alter them. The chemicals also mimic hormones in your bodies and can disrupt growth, metabolism and reproduction
Helpful tips- Use mineral based (active ingredients) and check the inactive ingredients. Steer clear of the following-
- Octinoxate (Octylmethoxycinnamate)
- Retinyl Palmate
EWG actually has a great tip sheet that you can print out and throw in your wallet to make it way less confusing and overwhelming so you can enjoy the summer with less fear of adding chemicals into your lives.
Last thing- We compared all of our new and old products between the 2 apps since the findings varied. We went with the safest choice. If one app said 10 and the other a 3 for the same product, we threw it out just to be safe because that means there are chemicals in it and one app thinks that level of chemicals is safe and the other doesn't. Better safe than sorry!
