A Few Things...(the we went to the Mumford concert and forgot to write edition)

Welcome back to A Few Things...  If you are new to TWH and or A Few Things...Hi!  Hello!  This is a peek inside our brains.  AFT is a column where we muse upon things that we are loving right now in the moment that get us all giddy.

Hello lovelies...1st Dibs

Hello lovelies...1st Dibs

Marcel Breuer Cesca chairs.... for years we have pined over these simple rattan and chrome beauties...Mieke even had them growing up which makes sense why I love them, because we share a brain.  About a year ago my neighbors had a few outside that were getting weathered and beaten up.  My heart hurt...those poor babies needed me and some TLC.  So I started project "new me".  My neighbor happily handed me these vintage beauties and I got to work.  I polished, sanded, scrubbed, screwed but I could not revive them.  So I scoured the internet to purchase some for our kitchen being constructed.   To my surprise, they were coming back into style and Restoration Hardware remade them!  I figured I can get the vintage ones once my girls hands are less sticky with ice cream and peanut butter.   They bring such a great element to the kitchen.  We are so happy together!

NEED THESE TOO!  Dying over here Electricmarigold !

NEED THESE TOO!  Dying over here Electricmarigold!

CB2s Earthenware dishes are swoon worthy!  When you things CB2 its usually sleek and modern pieces for your apartment or home but they are stepping it up with the warmth!  We walked in and gasped at every corner of the store.  Then we got to the kitchen section...we thought we were getting the blush pink dishes until we saw this collection...the Earthenware collection.  Heavy, solid and gorgeously 70s.

Thank you ma'am may we have another!   CB2 we are happy to call you our new friend :)

Open shelving in the kitchen is every girls best and worst friend and every decor loving lady's dream!  We have pinned, pined and pouted to get some open shelving in our kitchens.  Its stunning, clean and is a great place to house our crystals, cute vases and fun figures.  It is also a good place to get us to work on our organization and tidiness because it's all out there for the world to see.  Everyone wants that dream shelfie (Mieke's house is filled with them...Im working on mine) and open shelving in the kitchen can either give you that or make your kitchen look like a mess.  Here are a few inspirations for our brains and hearts...

Right?!  It's a little peek inside you for everyone to see!  Hopefully not the messy side :)

Thanks for coming into our brains!  Hope you had fun!

Uninspirational Quotes

To say this last year has been challenging and stressful is an understatement but with all of its downs we managed to find many more of its "ups".  The lights at the end of the tunnel seem brighter...warmer.  Through the darker days we came upon golden ones...well you get the picture.

Even though the storm has begun to pass we still find ourselves caught in lives mini showers from time to time...yes I am talking to you PMS!  It's during those times we really look at Instagram and its wonderful gift if gives us all...a little inspiration.  You know the ones...the accounts you follow that always have a beautiful message...not necessarily quote after quote but messages about strength, love, your own power and humanity.

Here are a couple we follow and every time we stop on these accounts we feel better, stronger, more powerful.  Hope you do too...

Angi Greene,  thank you for your insta account.  Every day we go through our feeds knowing yours will lift us up, inspire us and help make us better people.  You are a daily inspiration.  A little backstory on Angi...if you follow her you will know she is not just an athlete/trainer or a mom...she is a wonderful human, a fighter and just like you and me gets up everyday arguing with her inner self.

Follow Angi,  we promise you will start believing in your own magic.  Thank you Angi for taking us all on a soulful, honest journey.

Do you ever have those days where you almost don't believe in humanity anymore?  I know...super dramatic but do you?  Lately it has been harder to see the good everyday...with the world the way it has been going and the political state in our own country...not to mention women who become incredibly powerful and famous simply from having a sex tape and reality show and droves of young girls looking up to her.  When we feel like we need a little reminder of how incredible humans and our furry friends can be, we take a stop at Admirable People on insta. Most of the time you will end up in tears...the good kind...the inspiring kind.

When days seem long, and nights seem lonely...just remember...the sun will come up tomorrow. Surround yourself with people you love and that love you right back.  Wake up and feel grateful...an old friend once said to me.. "look at your feet. there you are"..  So on days that evil friend self doubt takes over..look at where you are and how far you have come.

Watch These Right Now!

If you know us at all, you know we are just overflowing with advice and suggestions for you.... Read this, wear these, they will look great on you, try this recipe, go easy on yourself, etc.

Today is no different, we are telling you.... If you haven't watched these shows yet.... DROP EVERYTHING and get to the television.

A little while ago we started getting all these tweets from TWH followers asking if we had checked out Stranger Things and then we started getting texts from friends in the middle of the night... You need to watch this show you will LOVE IT..

Then Erin & Tony started watching it and they flipped out and loved it so of course Tom and I had to see what was going on with this social phenomenon of a show.

Duffer Brother's Strike Gold On Netflix

Duffer Brother's Strike Gold On Netflix

Blown away is putting it lightly, Stranger Things has everything that you could ever want in a 80's nostalgic thriller.... Amazing adolescent characters that are smart AND funny, bikes, small town cops, fantastic music and costume, suspense and of course.... Winona Ryder & Matthew Modine.

It's hard to say too much with out giving anything away so we will just say this, the casting is fantastic, the writing is fantastic, the Duffer Brother's who create and direct are fantastic and for sure the kid who plays no teeth is fantastic!

It's a watch more then one episode a night sow for sure...

The next television obsession we have right now is The Night Of on HBO. Sunday nights can not come fast enough around our house these days.

HBO's Mini Series

HBO's Mini Series

It feels almost old fashioned to have to wait for your show every week instead of being able to watch them whenever you feel like it... But this show is worth the wait.

A limited series (we think thats just a fancy way of saying mini-series) that explores the night of a horrible crime and the fall out from the investigation should get a Golden Globe for casting alone.

Riz Ahmed.... The sweetest puppy dog eyes ever.

Riz Ahmed.... The sweetest puppy dog eyes ever.

Every single actor in this show is talented, well thought out and real. Have you ever watched something and every actor that comes on screen you find yourself thinking.. "Oh man, I love that guy" It's like they took every great actor from every show over the last 10-15 years and cast them. Did anyone else forget how much they loved John Turturro? Did anyone else never know they loved Riz Ahmed?

John Turturro is a King!

John Turturro is a King!

There is only one more episode left and we still have no freaking clue what really happened the night of the crime. My husband and I are full of theories but I can not wait to see how the writers wrap it up this Sunday. Although I will be sad to see these characters go.

Hurry up and binge watch it quick before Sunday... But if you figure it out don't tweet us any spoilers!

Now you have your homework.... Just in time for those early back to school bedtimes. Treat yourself to some amazing story telling.

A Few Things: That we are loving right now!

Photographer:?

As it seems we are easily obsessed with new ideas and inspiration, we would love to share with you what we are dreaming of these days, little things or ideas we can't get out of our heads.

Vintage Disco Balls:

Inspired by our our friend Michelle H. McCormick's lovely home and her collection of beautiful vintage disco balls. You can see them here, when they  graced the pages of Sunset Magazine.

Sunset Magazine: McCormick home

Sunset Magazine: McCormick home

The unique shapes of the vintage dance hall mirrored balls just take our breath away. On a mission to find our own, we have been scouring the internet. Keep your eyes peeled at your local fleas, because you just never know where one of these beauties will turn up. Once you have added one (or 5) of these into your home or office space, your world will get a lot more dreamy.

Studs:

Nope, not the kind of studs you remember from 80's films... But very small and easy to wear all-day-every-day earrings. For the non-fussy but fashion loving girl on the go, these studs are made for you. Most of our finds are @ $50 but we threw in a few pricey pairs just to drool over.

1. Splurge: James Banks butterfly wings are so beautiful it hurts, so are the rest of this jewelrs designs.

2. Shine: Tai's sparkling stars have a more down to earth price point then #1 but all of the magic.

3. Earthy: Rose Gold/Labradorite has us like woah! These Shashi studs are perfect for everyday.

4. Bunny: Aamaya by Priyanka brings us these whimsical pearl earrings with the bunny ears.  It was love at first sight!

Olive & June:

The creator of Olive & June nailed every detail when she dreamed up this beautiful salon. One of our favorite Instagram feeds, we are constantly pulling inspiration pics from this swoon worthy Los Angeles based nail salon. Olive & June manage to get the colors and the fun just right without going overboard. We are endlessly inspired.

We hope you find inspiration from our curated lists of beauty in this world.

Schoooools out! A few (easy) activities for you and them (part 1)

Things We Heart creations

Things We Heart creations

Well it's here!  The totally exciting and insanely exhausting summer break!  We can smell it in the air..this electricity from kids everywhere.  Lazy summer nights and adventurous summer days are upon us.

Sierra Club

Sierra Club

We remember that feeling well.  Like someone unlocking this giant glass door to freedom and fun.  Salty beach hair, golden skin and wet toes awaited us....then ssccreeeeaaachhhhh!  "MOM I WANT TO GO TO THE BEACH EVERYDAY!  IT'S SUMMER!"  That's right moms and dads... their beach dream filled time off is really fun for us but REALLY tiring too!  While most of us can't get to the beach every day or go on month long vacations we can definitely take this special time in their lives to create deeper bonds and have fun at home.

We came up with 3 simple, fun and easy activities to help those long lazy days at home.

1. Tie Dye!

Amazon

Amazon

Ok yes this is insanely messy but what is the fun of summer if you can't be covered in dye...right?!?  (no it really is messy but thats what old clothes and garbage bags are for)  Cover your workspace in plastic and get to it!  It's a memory they can wear for a long time!

2. Paint a wall with chalkboard paint

TWH bunnies at our own chalkboard wall

TWH bunnies at our own chalkboard wall

We did this years ago and still love it!  Our kids and their friends love to grab sidewalk chalk and spend hours with this wall.  They love seeing their creations on a wall.  If you have one outside better still...give them water blasters or a hose to let them wash it down when they are finished.

3. Camp outside

This one could be my favorite!  Whether you have a yard, balcony or patio (even works amazing inside!) set up a pup tent with sleeping bags or blankets and pillows and let loose!  Help them pack up toys and games if they are small and get some easy snacks ready!  They will be out there all day.  If you are lucky enough to be able to sleep out there, even better!  Picnics and sleeping under the stars...easy and dreamy.   Love this fun backyard camping ideas from Buzzfeed!

We love this smores maker for nights like these.  No fire required!

Go Take A Hike!

Troop Beverly Hills

Troop Beverly Hills

There is nothing quite like being out in nature. The smells of the canyons the sounds of the wind in the grasses and trees. Being outside away from the computer, your phone, the television... it really does refresh you.

For the past few years our family has gotten really into hiking and discovering new trails to explore with our kids. Being out in nature and having a little adventure is one of my boys favorite things to do. Climbing on rocks, looking at bugs and lizards and finding caves are all things that equal up to kid paradise.

Here is a short list of a  few of our favorite California hikes and a few we are looking forward to trying. Most of these options are family friendly, meaning our 5 year old can pretty much walk on his own (With a short biggie back ride from Daddy here and there).

1. SANTIAGO OAKS REGIONAL PARK-

2145 N. Windes Drive
Orange, CA 92869
santiagooaks@ocparks.com

Photo: letsgooutside.org

Why we love it: Besides being super lush (when we have enough rain)  and beautiful, we love Santiago Canyon because we can bring our dog! This 1,269-acre Santiago Oaks Regional Park is a nature lover’s paradise. Hiking, biking and equestrian friendly this park has tons of trails to choose from ranging from super easy to nice and long. On mother's day we spotted a beautiful mule deer from on of the hills and were able to just sit and watch her from above. It was beautiful!

2. Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park-

28373 Alicia Parkway
Laguna Niguel, CA 92677

Photo: meetup.com

Why we love it: Seriously one of the coolest hikes we have been on. A little long for our littlest, but so worth it when we came to the cave rock! We did see a rattlesnake just off the trail , but it was dead... A good reminder to be careful, they are there.

Pretending to be a bear- photo: thingsweheart.com

Approximately 4,500 acres of wilderness and natural open space land. Originally, part of the Juaneno or Acajchemem tribal land, it later was owned by Don Juan Avila, Louis Moulton, The Mission Viejo Company and now is under the jurisdiction of OC Parks. Within the park lands are mature oaks, sycamores, and elderberry trees, two year round streams and over 30 miles of official trails.

3. Paramount Ranch - Western Town

2903 Cornell Road, Agoura Hills, CA 91301

Photo: thecottonwoodtree.wordpress.com

Photo: thecottonwoodtree.wordpress.com

Now this is a hike/nature walk that we haven't tried yet but I am dying to because I think my boys will flip.  Bought by Paramount Pictures in 1927 and used as a film location for westerns.  Several stars filmed at the ranch including actors Bob Hope, Gary Cooper and Claudette Colbert, and director Cecil B. Demille. Films such as The Maid of Salem (1937), The Adventures of Marco Polo (1938), and Ebb Tide (1937) were filmed here.

A short hike from the parking lot, you can bring your dogs here as long as they stay on the trail and on leash. What a great combo of two things we love.. Nature and old Hollywood fun.

4. Murphy Ranch-

Sullivan Fire Rd, Pacific Palisades, CA 90272

Photo: Ted Soqui

As someone who grew up in Los Angeles... Hanging out in Topanga Canyon and the Palisades with kids that did graffiti, I can not believe I have never been here. Maybe I was too busy watching My So Called Life.

Murphy Ranch was brought up twice to us in the past two weeks by our really cool friends who were telling us all about it.

Here is some info we pulled off of Los Angeles Trails on HikeSpeak.com

In the 1930s Nazi sympathizers built a refuge in the Pacific Palisades. Herr Schmidt, Winona and Norman Stephens, and their followers occupied a self-contained stronghold in what is now Rustic Canyon between Sullivan Ridge and Will Rodgers State Park. Murphy Ranch was designed to serve as a hold out for fans of the Third Reich waiting for America to fall to the Nazis. Instead, the ranch was raided by U.S. authorities and closed in 1941. The abandoned buildings were transformed into an artists’ colony in the 60s and 70s, but were abandoned after the Mandeville Canyon Fire in 1978. Today the grounds of Murphy Ranch are uninhabited, dilapidated, and covered in graffiti. While much of the history is lost, several structures remain, along with long cement staircases that still link Murphy Ranch to Sullivan Ridge Fire Road, providing a 3.85-mile hike with 325 feet of elevation gain.

Now the rumors are the remains of the building were demolished this Spring and that sucks, because we may never get to see this incredible and crazy place. I feel like it would still be worth it to go and check it out and see where it used to be.

We hope you get up and get out with your loved ones this summer! We live in a beautiful place, lets use it.

Obsessing Over & Over...

Beatlemania!!

Beatlemania!!

We always like to share some of the things we are obsessing over with you guys. It's like a little glimpse inside our rapidly moving, gloriously messy minds.

This month we can't stop thinking about:

1. T.V Crushes

The simultaneous return of two of our absolutely favorite shows to television for brand new seasons.

Yes, Jon Snow is back... Ok he may still be dead but I have faith.... I mean who would kick Kit Harrington out of anything? * Warning Nerd-Girl Talk about to happen - This is the first season of the series where David Benioff & D.B. Weiss are running without a G.O.T book to base the plot twists off and I think they are doing a great job of staying true to each character.

If you could be a fly on the wall for one of the conversations Erin & I have you would know that we are both obsessed with Jared from Silicon Valley. Our favorite awkward assistant is back along with the rest of his crew to bring you more Pied Piper.

2. Sexy Wet Suits-

To say I have been on a mission is putting it lightly. I have become obsessed with finding the perfect spring suit for surfing this summer. ( I may not do it well, but that doesn't mean I can't look good.)

Most of my favorites, that are somewhat affordable are from Billabong. But we also love Siren Song  because they make the booty look so good and Rip Curl has some amazing ones as well.

3. Coconut Bacon-

Not bacon that tastes like coconut... Nope, this is coconut that tastes like bacon! (Just without harming any beautiful piggies)

Photo Tom Dumont- Lunch By Things We Heart

Photo Tom Dumont- Lunch By Things We Heart

A few months ago our friend over at Beard & Bonnet had a yummy potato soup up on her site that was topped with coconut bacon. Well, I made the soup and it was amazing.. But what really stuck around was the coconut bacon!

It is now a special treat that I dream of almost every day. It is actually super easy to make and yet also super easy to burn, so keep a close eye on it!

You can make a big batch and keep it in the pantry. I love it on salads and also to make little salad spear snacks, like above.

Find the recipe here on Beard & Bonnet.

4. You guys!

Erin and I are constantly looking for new things to share with you. To make you life easier, healthier and just plain fun.

We love researching products to share with all of our readers and finding amazing things for you and your babes. So please, comment when you see something you like... Or ask about the things you want to learn more about.

If you read Things We Heart regularly then you know we aren't shy...

Also... You guys can teach us! Let us know if we should be on to something we are missing out on!

I mean... WTF???

I mean... WTF???

Flower Power

Bardot

Bardot

Right now we are feeling endlessly inspired by flowers. On our hikes we see wild flowers out all over our beautiful home state of California and we are feeling drawn to everything floral.

We pulled together a few of our favorite flower powered numbers today for A Few Things.

Have you discovered Chirsty Dawn yet? We have been gaga over her amazing vintage inspired dresses for a while now and so we were super excited when we finally got our hands on one of her sweet floral numbers.

a 70's inspired wrap dress, a sweet spaghetti strapped sundress, a sexy floral jumpsuit or a sweet 40's inspired number. We seriously can not get enough of this mama's beautiful and simple designs. Check out the Christy Dawn online shop for all these beautiful numbers and more!

gorgeous photo- photographer unknown- can you help find them?

gorgeous photo- photographer unknown- can you help find them?

Mara Hoffman never lets us down when it comes to bold and beautiful use of patterns and our hearts nearly jumped u put of our throats when we saw her current Spring Collection. But this one print in particular has been haunting our dreams.

Dear Husband, my birthday is coming up very soon and I just know you want to take me surfing in this beautiful little number. I feel like it would really encourage me to get out into the waves. :)

Promise not to laugh? OK these look awful judging from the package... Erin and I have a long standing conversation about this where sometimes she will refuse to buy something based on how horrible the packaging is... And while I am totally with that and I go gaga for perfect packaging. Sometimes, you have to put up with the cheesy to get the goods inside.

Case in point.

Now many people would walk right by these at the drug store... But I fell hook line and sinker. And once they are out of the package and delightfully decorating your braid they are amazing!

Goodbye to flower crowns at Coachella (and everywhere else!) Hello daisies in your hair. Because its it's good enough for Drew, it's good enough for all of us.

A Few Things...

Welcome back to A Few Things...where you get a little peek into our fun and crazy brains.  Here are a few things we are obsessing about right now.

1. Documentary Now-  This is great enough to be numbers 1-3 today but we will know you want the 2 other things we are loving today.

Written and staring Fred Armisen, Seth Meyers and our crush, Bill Hader have created the most hilarious mocumentary series ever.  Helen Mirin is the host for each episode if that isn't amazing enough.  One by one the episodes gorgeously mock famous and celebrated documentaries in the same style they were filmed and with similar characters but fictitious subjects.  If you love these 3 men as much as we do..do yourself a HUGE favor and grab a bowl of popcorn, a handful of chocolate chips and watch.  You're welcome...and sorry you will no longer be able to get anything done because you will be obsessed.

2. White kitchens- Duh!

My Inspo for everything!  That fireplace, skylight, dog, brass...all of it!

My Inspo for everything!  That fireplace, skylight, dog, brass...all of it!

Yes this is a big old DUH but it really deserves this accolade today :).  I am lucky enough to get to renovate my kitchen and have been dreaming of white kitchens for 10 years now.  So endless days spent on Pinterest have turned into an endless obsession with getting it right in my own home!  Stay tuned for a whole page dedicated to these glorious bright and clean beauties until then...let's keep pinning!

So clean and happy!

So clean and happy!

3. Mini Lightbox signs from Heidi Swapp

Seriously getting obsessed with these. We follow a lot of Australian and Scandinavian accounts on Insta and we keep seeing these. I have been holding off of grabbing one for my girls because if I grab one, then I will have to grab two!  And if they have them in their rooms then I would want one in mine and then it's just a marquis party!

Thanks for coming inside our brains!  Hope it was fun!  Inspiration is around every corner

Sporty Spice

Lets be honest, more often then not Erin and I are Pumpkin Spice if we are any spice girl.

We like to keep it pretty cozy and even when we get Posh we may still have on leggings.

But lately we have been hitting up the gym and it feels so good to turn over that Sporty leaf!

Here are a few things that keep us motivated at the gym.

1. Spotify-

If you don't follow us on Spotify, you really should! Not only can you see what we are listening to lately, you can also check out our awesome playlists! We have two "Work Out" mixes, so you can switch it up depending on your mood. We get pretty eclectic with our tastes, so be prepared to bounce from Missy Elliot to Elvis Costello to Lady Leshurr to AC/DC.... And of course No Doubt.

We seriously could not work out without our music... It's a must.

2. Work out gear you can wear all day.

1. Clavin Klein  2. Vintage T-Shirt 3. Mara Hoffman 4. Under Armour 5. Target 6. Under Armour

Lately we have been loving Under Armour and their leggings for workouts. They are high quality and comfortable, plus they have great designs and are about half the price of some other brands. We have also been obsessed with Mara Hoffman sports bras and the classic Calvin Klein ones.

Usually we wil;l break up our sports look with a vintage T-shirt. It helps us keep feeling like ourselves even with the leggings and sneakers.

3. Green Juice-

Having this delicious juice bar right inside my local gym is pretty perfect. Sometimes while on the elliptical i'm already dreaming of a nice cold Indian Summer or a healthy spicy Straight Up.

Whatever inspires you to be the healthiest, happiest version of yourself embrace it! It's not about fitting into a certain pair of jeans... (Although I have a few I may never be able to wear again) it's about keeping your spirits up and your heart strong. As mamas we have a lot to do and a lot to manage. Exercise helps clear your mind and lets you focus on whats important.

XOXO- TWH

California Girls

My husband and I spent hours on end playing at the beach both in California & Massachusetts when we were kids, and now our children do. Truth be told, I kind of love little tan kids running around all summer. Somehow, summer captures for me what being a kid really is. Tan, sandy, salty skin... Popsicles melting down your arm.... laughing and splashing in the waves. The point is, my family will always be a beach family. It's who we are and it is ingrained in our souls. My husband loves to surf and sail, I hope our boys will too.

So, the question for us is never going to be, "Do we go to the beach?", the question is, "How do we do it safely?"

My little tan babies enjoying the sun and sea last summer.

My little tan babies enjoying the sun and sea last summer.

California Girls... And I would imagine girls & boys from sunny locals all over the world, grow up constantly exposed to the sun. And while we may all love being a cute tan Gidget... Most of us  (almost all of us) will end up with some sort of sun damage.

Of course I use tons of sunblock on my kids all day everyday at the beach or the pool. But I will admit to being guilty of not remembering to put it on their faces every day during the school year.

I mean honestly, if they have all have their homework and have brushed their teeth by the time we scramble out the door in the morning, I feel like I should get a trophy. (Still waiting)

two freckle faces- post dermatologist for mom

two freckle faces- post dermatologist for mom

But, the other day my son tagged along with me to my Dermatologist appointment and was lucky enough to see his mama get her face frozen and sliced all in the name of hoping to prevent some really scary sun damage... While laying on the table I looked over at my sweet son and his adorable freckles and I thought... UGGGHHHH I am the WORST for not being more diligent about sunblock everyday for my boys. EVERY SINGLE DAY.

Because I didn't always make the best choices about the sun in my life, now in my 30's I can see the years of sun worshiping starting to take a toll on my skin and I don't want that for my kids. I'm not talking wrinkles although that is a HUGE bummer... I am taking serious stuff, scary stuff that can happen if we don't take care of our skin.

Little Mieke growing up in the sun. Note the lotion.

Little Mieke growing up in the sun. Note the lotion.

For all of us that grew up in the sun... Here are a few things for all of us to think about.

There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma.

Basal cell and squamous cell cancers are less serious types and make up 95% of all skin cancers. Also referred to as non-melanoma skin cancers, they are highly curable when treated early.

Melanoma, made up of abnormal skin pigment cells called melanocytes, is the most serious form of skin cancer and causes 75% of all skin cancer deaths. Left untreated, it can spread to other organs and is difficult to control. (From MedicineNet.com)

So lets break down those three types of skin cancer so that we can get a clear picture of what each one would mean to us.

1. Basal cell carcinoma- This is the most common type of skin cancer... With more then 2 million cases being diagnosed in America each year.

This skin cancer usually develops on skin that gets sun exposure, such as on the head, neck, and back of the hands. BCC is especially common on the face, often forming on the nose. It is possible to get BCC on any part of the body, including the trunk, legs, and arms. Oh and don't forget the ears! Our ears get sun all the time and we often forget to put sun block on them.

You may be familiar with this type of skin cancer because Hugh Jackman has been working to draw public attention to BCC and raise awareness since he has had to have numerous spots removed.

Another scary aspect of BCC is that they are very hard to see and so you can miss discovering it for quite a while.

2.  Squamous cell carcinoma- With 700,000 cases a year in the States, SCC is the second most common skin cancer. This is a cancer that develops in the thin, flat squamous cells that make up the outer layer of the skin. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, open sores, elevated growths with a central depression, or warts; they may crust or bleed.

This skin cancer tends to develop on skin that has been exposed to the sun for years. It is most frequently seen on sun-exposed areas, such as the head, neck, and back of the hands. Women frequently get SCC on their lower legs.

It is possible to get SCC on any part of the body, including the inside of the mouth, lips, and genitals. Squamous cell carcinoma of the skin is usually not life-threatening, though it can be aggressive in some cases. Untreated, squamous cell carcinoma of the skin can grow large or spread to other parts of your body, causing serious complications.

3. Melanoma - The most serious type of skin cancer, develops in the cells (melanocytes) that produce melanin — the pigment that gives your skin its color. Melanoma can also form in your eyes and, rarely, in internal organs, such as your intestines.

Moles, brown spots and growths on the skin are usually harmless — but not always. Anyone who has more than 100 moles is at greater risk for melanoma. The first signs can appear in one or more atypical moles. That's why it's so important to get to know your skin very well and to recognize any changes in the moles on your body. Look for the ABCDE signs of melanoma, and if you see one or more, make an appointment with a physician immediately.

The exact cause of all melanomas isn't clear, but exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight or tanning lamps and beds increases your risk of developing melanoma. Limiting your exposure to UV radiation can help reduce your risk of melanoma.

SOOO after reading all that information  the take away is that prolonged exposure to Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is the number one cause of skin cancer, but UV light from tanning beds is just as harmful. So tan from a can it will have to be if you want to stay gold.

Thank heavens for huge Lifeguard hats

Thank heavens for huge Lifeguard hats

We all need to really think about what we are doing to our bodies.

We need to be diligent about our hats, glasses and rash guards. We need to limit our hours of exposure and set up camp under umbrellas at the beach. We need to be diligent about applying sunscreen to ourselves and our kids... I know sometimes we are so rushed to get the kids covered we forget ourselves and our partners.

Looks like all of us Gidgets have to take a cue from Larue! Did you know there is a right way to apply sunscreen and a wrong way? Here are the rules from the American Academy of Dermatology.

Follow these tips from dermatologists when applying sunscreen:

  1. Choose a sunscreen that has an SPF of 30 or higher, is water resistant, and provides broad-spectrum coverage, which means it protects you from UVA and UVB rays. Follow these helpful tips when selecting a sunscreen.

  2. Apply sunscreen generously before going outdoors. It takes approximately 15 minutes for your skin to absorb the sunscreen and protect you. If you wait until you are in the sun to apply sunscreen, your skin is unprotected and can burn.

  3. Use enough sunscreen. Most adults need at least one ounce of sunscreen, about the amount you can hold in your palm, to fully cover all exposed areas of your body. Rub the sunscreen thoroughly into your skin.

  4. Apply sunscreen to all bare skin. Remember your neck, face, ears, tops of your feet and legs. For hard‐to‐reach areas like your back, ask someone to help you or use a spray sunscreen. If you have thinning hair, either apply sunscreen to your scalp or wear a wide‐brimmed hat. To protect your lips, apply a lip balm with a SPF of at least 15.

  5. Reapply sunscreen at least every two hours to remain protected, or immediately after swimming or excessively sweating. People who get sunburned usually didn't use enough sunscreen, didn't reapply it after being in the sun, or used an expired product. Your skin is exposed to the sun's harmful UV rays every time you go outside, even on cloudy days and in the winter. So whether you are on vacation or taking a brisk fall walk in your neighborhood, remember to use sunscreen.

Here are some amazing tips from Things We Heart on what brands of Sunscreens we recommend

What to look for-  You want a Physical Sunscreen and not a Chemical one.  Look for Zinc and/or Titanium Dioxide only in the list of active ingredients.  Physical sunscreens (100% mineral based) actually block the suns harmful rays, while a Chemical one absorbs the rays and chemically alter them.  The chemicals also mimic hormones in your bodies and can disrupt growth, metabolism and reproduction

Exposure to sunlight during the winter months puts you at the same risk as exposure during the summertime. So it is important to remember to put sunblock on our kids faces every single day.. Because those cute sweet freckles today are tomorrows headache for your kids.

Most importantly, and we can not stress this enough, is to find a Dermatologist that you trust and have regular checkups.

Did you know you should be giving yourself and your kids a skin check every month? That way you are aware of when things are changing or becoming worrisome.

Here is how you do it!

If you have made it to the end of this, thank you for reading we know it was a lot of information, but we feel it is so important to raise awareness about skin cancer and sun damage. Both of us have had to have little weird spots snipped off and so many of our friends these days are talking about it and going through the same experience. If you grew up in the sun and are now paying the price, rest assured, you are not alone.

A Few Things...

These lovely trees are blooming everywhere in LA. So So happy!  This one found in Glendale, CA

These lovely trees are blooming everywhere in LA. So So happy!  This one found in Glendale, CA

Welcome to the inside of our brain.  A Few Things is where you get to see the little things that are making us happy right now.  I mean there so many things make us happy but these are the little things that put a quiet smile on our faces and in our hearts.  Come on in...

It's officially spring in LA as you may have guessed from our last post.  And you can definitely feel it. Spring in LA grabs your Instagram deadend senses and shakes them back to life.  The once chilly air has been replaced by insane wafts of jasmine and plumeria.  The flowers are in full effect.  Every corner you turn there is an explosion of color and gorgeous scents.  Thank you LA!

All flowers we can find just walking down any street in LA!  Lucky us! The rare sight of cherry and plum blossoms has us all like.....

All flowers we can find just walking down any street in LA!  Lucky us! The rare sight of cherry and plum blossoms has us all like.....

This tee shirt had us stop in our tracks...well every tee from this super cute girl.  We found it on a random Insta exploration and are crazy happy about it.

Girls Support Girls...BAM! How cute is she??

Not only is this Daisy Natives tee super cute with the most powerful message of girls supporting girls but $1 from every sale goes to the group Girls For A Change.  An organization that helps girls have a voice and inspires them to get to their full potential.  And at $26 a pop you can pass them around as gifts and give back while doing it!

Oh yeah this actually happened once upon a time!  A rose, turmeric, coconut bath in India!.  Now if I could only have that young, wrinkle free skin again...

Oh yeah this actually happened once upon a time!  A rose, turmeric, coconut bath in India!.  Now if I could only have that young, wrinkle free skin again...

Baths!  Need we say more.  On a recent visit to a friends house she revealed her insane bath ritual that she does daily.  Now, we don't mean insane like crazy, we mean insane like "Wow.. you are the most awesome amazing self loving woman ever and you deserve every second!".  So we got inspired and hopped in a hot bath filled with epsom salts and the dreamiest smelling essential oil we found in India.  Although it only lasted 10 min...it was 10 min of heaven and healing love.

A little tid bit on why epsom salts are so amazing (just make sure you get 100% all natural, GMO free epsoms)

  • Improved heart and circulatory health, reducing irregular heartbeats, preventing hardening of the arteries, reducing blood clots and lowering blood pressure.
  • Improved ability for the body to use insulin, reducing the incidence or severity of diabetes.
  • Flushed toxins and heavy metals from the cells, easing muscle pain and helping the body to eliminate harmful substances.
  • Improved nerve function by electrolyte regulation. Also, calcium is the main conductor for electrical current in the body, and magnesium is necessary to maintain proper calcium levels in the blood.
  • Relieved stress. Excess adrenaline and stress are believed to drain magnesium, a natural stress reliever, from the body. Magnesium is necessary for the body to bind adequate amounts of serotonin, a mood-elevating chemical within the brain that creates a feeling of well being and relaxation.
  • Reduced inflammation to relieve pain and muscle cramps.
  • Improved oxygen use.
  • Improved absorption of nutrients.
  • Improved formation of joint proteins, brain tissue and mucin proteins.
  • Prevention or easing of migraine headaches.

How ever you enjoy the little things...make sure you enjoy them.  And seek them out.  Because it really is all about the little moments.

The best of the Oscars 2016

Demi Moore-1989

Demi Moore-1989

For us there are only a handful of nights that fill us with both excitement and tingles... The Acadamey Awards is definitely topping that list. Growing up we loved to watch all the beautiful ladies in their beautiful dresses being celebrated for their art..... You can keep your  boring princess dreams. nothing is more dreamy then being a Movie Stars!

As adults, it is still a night where we can escape and dream... Plus we could look at Oscar dresses all year long.

As you know we try not to be mean here on Things We Heart so we are going straight in to what we LOVED last night.

YES!

YES!

Like Leonardo DiCaprio finally taking home the top award in his craft after 6 nominations and endless fantastic performances over the years. After years of watching this actor nail every single part.... Fill us with emotion with the slightest facial expression, give up all vanity and act his little ass off again and again... Leo finally gets the gold!! Plus he works his ass off to bring about awareness on climate change and trying to save our environment before it is too late!

We don't know if you guys have noticed this, but Leo seems like a total catch ladies!

Moving on to the dresses! Here are some of our favorites!

1. SAOIRSE RONAN- In Calvin Klein

Wearing a custom made Calvin Klein dress Satires (Pronounced like: SEAR-SHA) was simple and young and stunning.  We love this color on the Irish-American actress and how she didn't over accessorize, or get too fussy with her hair.

Sometimes all a girl needs is a glittery dress and the perfect makeup. Did you see her makeup? Dreamy. At 21 years old and already on her second Academy Award nomination, we are sure we will see this beauty on the red carpet again very soon.

2. Cate Blanchett- Armani Privè

Image Source:  Getty / Jason Merritt

The word on the streets... OK the word on the red carpet, is that Cate picked out the color sea foam green first thing and then had Armani Privè make the gone for her. While it is slightly more frilly then what Cate usually wears it works for her because she kept everything else simple. Beautiful light makeup and simple jewelry.

We are always fans of this beautiful woman and her sartorial choices are always spot on. She looks like a throw-back to the Golden Era of Hollywood... Like a modern Grace Kelly.

3. Rooney Mara- Givenchy

Image Source:  Getty / Jason Merritt

Rooney Mara never fails to bring the drama. In this sheer white lace Givenchy gown she is killing us. We love the detailing of this dress and the way she always stays so true to herself with her makeup and hair. Rooney is never one to blend into a crowd. By the way have you seen Carol? She is so sweet and fresh looking in that movie you may not even recognize her with out her signature edge.

Although I think I would have gone for a different shoe, these look almost like platform flip flops in this picture, Rooney tops our list in this stunning cut out gown.

5. Lady Gaga- Brandon Maxwell

If you had told us a few years ago that Lady Gaga would have made our best dressed list, and at the Oscars to boot, we would;t have believed it. But in this Brandon Maxwell Gown-Pant combo Lady Gaga was a picture of elegance. Beautiful Old Hollywood waves in her hair and simple makeup.... She completely nailed it. Let's not even get started on her performance!

Emotional, raw and amazingly beautiful. All this woman needs is a piano and she can move all of us. We are so happy that she is growing out if the over the top outfits and gimmicks that she used to employee... Standing there, as her simple, beautiful self,  in her complete lack of excess... She shines like never before.

That about sums up the evening for us... Although there were a lot of other looks we loved, those were the ones that lasted with us this morning. Jennifer Lawrence we loved your simple makeup and hair... Margot Robbie you're so freaking hot its amazing, Diane Kruger showed up and killed it at the after parties in her Reem Acra gown.... Brie Larson we are so happy for you! What a talent and a true beauty you have!

Tell us what you think! Comment bellow to share your red carpet hits and misses.

A Few Things- Love Hangover...Letting the love linger?

Opposites attract...2 of our (5) Valentines with two different feelings about the day after Valentine's Day.  Are you "nostalgic" or "good riddance"?

Opposites attract...2 of our (5) Valentines with two different feelings about the day after Valentine's Day.  Are you "nostalgic" or "good riddance"?

Today is such a cool day!  It's Presidents Day, the day after Valentine's Day, and Grammy Monday. So what that really means is...sales, clean up time and snuggling on the couch watching the music industry's big night with a warm bowl of popcorn and rose with our men.

As much as we LOVE a good holiday there is just something really uplifting about the day after.  It really feels like another fresh start.  Cleaning up the decorations and tornado of fun the kids had, putting the food away in our new favorite glass containers really helps us move on and forward with a pep in our step.  But as much as the clean slate is fun we always let a few things linger a day longer to remind ourselves of the fun day we had. (and its pretty...!)

I let the days Valentines hang on the wall for a day or 2 after to let the loving feeling linger a bit or until they run by and rip them down.

Speaking of Valentines day...this sweet little heart "neon" light from Oh Joy for Target has us all kinds of giddy.  If you have been following us for a while you know we have a love affair for neon signs...no matter what it is we feel like we need it on every wall in the houses.

Blank wall?...Hang a piece of neon...voila!

Blank wall?...Hang a piece of neon...voila!

Grabbed this one after stalking each store for weeks and its just so sweet hanging on a blank bedroom wall!  Then I saw this picture and now I need to get another one to recreate this gorgeous gallery wall.

Oh Oh Joy...you had us at neon hearts and bright gallery walls with brass accents!

These new animal planters at West Elm are making the argument for more house plants a winning one.  If you are like us and have a tough time with keeping your green thumb from turning black you can fill them other things too!  Throw your left over V day chocolates in there, or place next to your bedside and put in the sparkly stuff you got or your favorite crystals...

After the plants are in plant heaven throw in some crystals, pens, make them catch-alls, makeup...its endless.  They are too cute not to stash all around the house.  Plus they will elevate your shelf-ie.

So how ever you celebrate the end of the big V day do it with love and a make a clean slate.  Who says New Years day is the only day to start fresh?

Letting the love linger or no?

Happy Day After Valentine's Day!  We LOVE you

Take a sick day...with them!

'Tis the season.  The season of sniffles and sick.  Of sleepless nights and warm bodied cuddles.  It is also the season of staying home from school and LOTS of TV.

Sick day TV-athon in the guestroom.

Sick day TV-athon in the guestroom.

We both have the same thinking...when they are sick let them do exactly what we dream we could do at the end of every day...veg out, relax, eat and sleep.  But oddly enough they get bored of hours of Disney JR and Netflix.  Sounds crazy...right?  But their beautiful brains (thankfully) need more stimuli than just loud crazy images.  They need creativity, imagination and thought...even when sick!

Lego time- Those small fun packs are perfect for storing for a sick day

Lego time- Those small fun packs are perfect for storing for a sick day

Now, this is not saying you should force them to do activities and push them when they are in bad shape but when it's day 2 and they are on the mend from the flu and a 24 hour marathon of PJ Masks or Aquabats has turned into 48 hours a little mom/dad help towards a mellow and creative new activity isn't so bad for them.

4 (mellow new and fun) activities for that looming sick day.

1. Make a Book- Grab a few pieces of paper from your printer, fold in half, and staple the center spine....voila!  A book!  Let them illustrate and write their own story. And for the littles that can't write, they can dictate the story to you while you write it under their drawings.

IMG_8532.JPG

2. DIY Playdoh- The best!  It does take a little cooking (only a few minutes) but they can help you create any color they want and even help you knead the colors in.  Add kid safe glitter and a little vanilla extract for extra excitement. You can also call it "clay" for the older ones who insist playdoh is for babies.

Colored Playdough

Materials

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1 tablespoon cream of tartar
  • Food coloring
  • Saucepan
  • 1 cup flour

Directions

  1. Combine water, oil, salt, cream of tartar, and food coloring in a saucepan and heat until warm.
  2. Remove from heat and add flour.
  3. Stir, then knead until smooth. The cream of tartar makes this dough last 6 months or longer, so resist the temptation to omit this ingredient if you don't have it on hand.
  4. Store this dough in an airtight container or a Ziploc freezer bag.

3. On Hand Science Boxes-  While strolling through the art isles at your local Target (or Amazon), pick up a few science themed boxes for a rainy day.  They are inexpensive, easy, engaging and really fun!

4. Cooking-  A great way to get them interested in eating if they do it themselves.  Grab a kid friendly knife, a bowl, whisk and a cutting board and let them chop and mix up anything you have.  (Just no helping by the stove)  We often let them come up with their own recipes.  They love to experiment with different ingredients and see how it tastes.

Kids love to cook...let them mix anything they want together and see what happens when you cook it!

Kids love to cook...let them mix anything they want together and see what happens when you cook it!

We also always have markers and paint/brushes on hand with big art pads (also from Target) for art projects...those are always a good distraction from a Flu. Turn one wall in their room or yours for their creations!  Aaron Brothers has a good Buy One Get One on frames and their masterpieces can look even better in a simple gallery frame.

Love the all white frames!  Pinterest

How ever you choose to let them spend their sick days...we hope you get in tons of stolen snuggles and kisses.  The only silver lining...they are too tired to run away :)

Work it out

Jane Fonda

Jane Fonda

Lately we have been trying to focus a little more on our health and fitness.

We have both been ramping up our fitness routines with running and hitting up the local gym.

Of course, we have days where we are just too busy with volunteering at schools, working or one of our littles gets sick... plus a million other reasons we just can get there.

As mom's our lives are pretty hectic and getting into a really nice workout zone feels pretty great. Plus we are obsessed with two Instagram accounts that always inspire and motivate us to get off our butts. Both Amanda Bisk and Kayla Itsines are from Australia... Not only is OZ one of the most beautiful places on Earth, but obviously home to some of the most beautiful people.

Amanda Bisk @amandabisk

Amanda Bisk @amandabisk

Amanda Bisk was a pole vaulter who was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue disease and used yoga and healthy eating to regain control of her life. Her strong and beautiful body is so motivating to us when we feel like giving up. Read her philosophies on health here

Kayla Itsines- @kayla_itsines

Kayla Itsines- @kayla_itsines

Oh Kayla, you and your crazy jumps, squats and lunges! Never have we felt more in shape then when we were doing the BBG on the regular. This woman has designed a program that totally and completely will change your body... But man does it take a ton of dedication and lots of hard work! Remind me why I took such a long break from this program again?

Of course, if you're going to the gym or for a run you're going to need an amazing playlist to get you motivated right? Because if you're anything like us.... You are the weird girl dancing on the elliptical in the back of the gym.

Lucky for you Mamas and everyone else, you don't need to take the time to perfect a perfect playlist because we have made not one... but two magical work out mixes just for you!

Follow our Spotify work out playlists and you will be able to push your self to music we love and we hope you will too. These playlists are fun and motivating and maybe a little cray-cray in the sense that we take you from Blur to Outkast to Queen and back again.

Pink Lady

For most of our lives we have had an obsession with pink locked ladies... Frenchie, Strawberry Shortcake, Jem & The Holograms....

Andy from Pretty in Pink... Ok, so she is actually a red head, but everything about her is pink.

I think we have told you before how we share a brain and it is kind of creepy... Well the other day i was dreaming of and missing my pink hair from a year or so back... when I received a goodie bag from Erin with a bottle of pink Manic Panic. It's like she could read my mind. Well of course I had to use it right away.... Because what else is a girl to do?

Pink Short Haired Mama- Photo by the bad-ass Steve Erle - Make Up by the divine Gregory Arlt- Three kids over the photo shoot... All mine. 2015

I explained on Things We Heart before that I have long had a problem with my addiction to changing my hair... I just can't seem to sit still with one look... I have publicly apprized to my hair dressers... So Jorge Serrano, I am sorry to do this after you spent 5 hours making me blonde a few weeks ago, but here it is! I love you.  I also apologize to my husband Tom but this is what happens when you go talk to Tony on the phone after the kids are asleep instead of watching Mr. Robot with me!

TWH- No makeup messy Gym hair

TWH- No makeup messy Gym hair

Now, here is the fun part... As you can see the color Erin got me was not the pastel, peachy pinkish, peony color she and I both love. But that was not a problem because I just cut the brighter color with tons of conditioner. You can mix 3 parts conditioner & 1 part color to get a softer shade then the one in the bottle.

So after I mixed the color with conditioner... I still think it was a little bright. I only left it on as long as the application took and then I washed it right out.... As you can see I also didn't wear gloves which is not a good idea.

So after the first was it was pretty pink! What I like about the "Sloppy" application is that I don't get every strand of hair covered in color. So the end result is sort of a Neapolitan Ice Cream vibe. Which I love.

TWH- Pink hair after 1 wash

TWH- Pink hair after 1 wash

Since this was a little too bright for me... I put a bunch of deep conditioner in my hair and slept in it. Then I washed it again in the morning. Washing your hair too much will make it super dry. So if you wash your hair twice or three times in 2 days give it a good 3 or 4 days to build back up it's natural oils.

Now I have the perfect color for me! And in just a few washes it will be gone. Temporary color is so much fun and is a great way to change up your look if you get bored easily. If you haven't played with hair color before you should totally try it! Just remember, it's only hair and you can always fix it.

TWH- Barely there color

Have fun! I promise you if you're a mom your kids are going to love it! This morning my sons didn't even bat a lash when they woke up and saw mommy with pink hair.

Leave us a comment do you like the lighter or the brighter pink best?

A few things..."White" Christmas Edition

OOOOH we love us some holidays and the whole holiday season is one of them.  The (slight) chill in the air, twinkling lights, joyous songs and holiday cheer has us giddy all December long.   It's filled with love and fun!  To us, it represents everyone coming together to celebrate one  another....and well then there are the presents and the fun decorations too so that just sends our love for this season over the edge.

Never gets old...ever...ever.

Never gets old...ever...ever.

Maybe its because we both live in Los Angeles-ish and our temps dip to a freezing 65 degrees that we crave a white (furry) christmas and our houses reflect it when we decorate.

The cutest, Em Hendersons tree last year...love that white and metallic vibe.  That 70s vintage chair doesn't hurt either.
